0 / who we are

We are a community of independent Lifesharing households who live as extended families with people with developmental disabilities.

1 / our philosophy

Established in 1989, Cadmus is an association of Lifesharing families in and around Great Barrington, Massachusetts. Cadmus Lifesharers aim to create a community in which it is no handicap to be handicapped. It is a community of independent Lifesharing households who live as extended families with people with developmental disabilities. The households join together for many social and therapeutic activities thereby giving everyone in the community a wide circle of friends and opportunity for fun, growth, and support.

2 / who we are

Cadmus runs on the principles of shared vision, interdependence, and interaction. We believe that a system based on these principles will value people and create optimal conditions for those with special needs to be supported and treated with dignity, respect, and maximum attention to the specifics of their individual lives. We believe that people learn, live, and labor most effectively when they are appreciated, honored, and valued for the contributions they make to the common good.

3 / volunteering

Lifesharing relies on the involvement, dedication, creativity, and heart of our many volunteers. In each Lifesharing home there are two to four volunteers who stay for approximately one year. Most come to us through one of two international volunteer placement services- SCI or Freunde. And, of course, we welcome volunteers from the United States as well!
